Claim: llms.txt improves AI search visibility

Verdict Not supported

No major search platform documents using llms.txt for ranking or citation. Google says Google Search ignores the file, so it neither helps nor harms rankings there. llms.txt itself is a 2024 community proposal for a curated Markdown index of a site.

“Add an llms.txt file and AI search engines will understand and cite your site more.”

There is no platform documentation or published controlled study showing that llms.txt increases citations in AI search answers.

It is a proposal, not a standard adopted by search engines. Some documentation sites publish one (OpenAI’s API docs do, for example), mostly to help coding assistants and agents read their documentation.

We found no statement from OpenAI, Microsoft or Perplexity that their search products read llms.txt for ranking or citation. Missing documentation does not prove non-use. It means the claim is unverified.

That is one assistant, one category and a small sample. Still, it is the only measurement in the reports reviewed here. It doesn’t support llms.txt as a visibility tactic.

When it is still reasonable to publish one

Section titled “When it is still reasonable to publish one”

As an agent-facing convenience for documentation sites, at low cost. Just don’t report it as a visibility tactic.
